Which Teams Will Thrive Under The 2026 Regulations?

Formula 1 returns from its summer shutdown this weekend, but the Dutch Grand Prix is not simply the opening round of the second half of the season…


Zandvoort will be hosting its final Formula 1 race for the foreseeable future, and the farewell comes at a fascinating moment for the sport.


The 2026 regulations have created an entirely new generation of cars, Antonelli has established himself as the benchmark, McLaren have finally converted its potential into a victory, Ferrari remains within firm contention for the title and Red Bull arrives with Max Verstappen facing his final home race.


For the first (and last) time, Zandvoort will host a Sprint weekend, leaving teams with just one practice session before competitive running begins. Add a potentially wet Friday and Saturday, a major McLaren upgrade package and Honda’s latest power-unit development for Aston Martin, and the final Dutch Grand Prix could provide one of the clearest tests yet of who has really understood the 2026 regulations.


The central question is therefore not simply who is fastest...


It’s which cars can extract performance from Zandvoort’s unique combination of high-speed corners, banking, energy management and limited preparation time?


Zandvoort's Layout

At just 4.259km, Zandvoort is one of the shorter circuits on the Formula 1 calendar, but its compact size simply disguises its demanding nature.


The circuit combines fast, sweeping corners with significant elevation changes, narrow sections and heavily banked turns. Tarzan and Scheivlak demand confidence, while Hugenholtzbocht and Arie Luyendijkbocht give the circuit a character that is almost impossible to replicate elsewhere on the calendar.


The banking is a particularly important feature, with the final corner reaching 18 degrees, while Hugenholtzbocht uses progressive banking that allows drivers to experiment with different lines. These features were introduced as part of Zandvoort’s modernisation ahead of its return to Formula 1 in 2021, but crucially, the changes did not sanitise the circuit; they enhanced its personality.


There is no major circuit redevelopment to account for this weekend, which is exactly what makes the venue so useful.


The circuit has remained distinctive rather than being modified to accommodate modern Formula 1 cars, with a narrow layout, elevation changes and banking continuing to impose their own demands.


This means that overtaking at Zandvoort is extremely difficult, which again increases the value of qualifying and makes the first lap particularly important. The new 2026 overtaking system will rely on energy deployment rather than conventional DRS, adding another layer to the strategic battle, making this year's qualifying more important than ever.


If two cars have similar race pace, the one starting ahead may have a significant advantage simply because Zandvoort offers relatively few opportunities to recover track position.


Where The Regulation Changes Come In

The newly introduced 2026 regulations have fundamentally changed where Formula 1 cars generate their performance. The Venturi tunnels that defined the previous ground-effect generation are gone, replaced by a flatter floor and larger diffuser. The cars are also shorter, narrower and around 30kg lighter, while the FIA has targeted reductions of approximately 30% in downforce and 55% in drag.


The result is a car that needs to be much more efficient with the performance it has.


At Zandvoort, this means that a team cannot simply chase maximum downforce and expect the lap time to follow. The car needs to remain stable through the fast corners while avoiding excessive drag, and it needs enough mechanical grip to deal with the slower sections without compromising the rest of the lap.


The aerodynamic changes are only half of the story, and energy management will be central throughout the weekend.


The 2026 power units have shifted significantly towards electrical power. The MGU-H has been removed, while the MGU-K is considerably more powerful, with the FIA targeting a much closer split this season between combustion and electrical power. Energy recovery has also increased, making deployment and harvesting fundamental parts of performance rather than secondary considerations.


Active aero has been introduced to work alongside that power-unit philosophy.


The front and rear wings can switch between a high-downforce configuration for corners and a low-drag configuration on designated straights. Unlike the old DRS system, the low-drag mode is not simply an overtaking aid restricted to a car running within one second of another. It is available to all drivers at the appropriate points of the circuit.


That creates an interesting dynamic at Zandvoort because there are not the same long straights like at Monza or Baku where outright power and drag efficiency can dominate the weekend. Instead, the circuit repeatedly asks the cars and drivers to transition between high-speed cornering and short bursts of acceleration.


The best package should therefore be the one that can manage the compromise between aerodynamic load, drag, mechanical grip and electrical deployment.


Zandvoort will be truly telling of the true strengths of the 2026 cars, much more than a conventional power-sensitive circuit would.


The Sprint Format

This is where the weekend’s format becomes even more significant.


Zandvoort has never hosted a Sprint before. This time, teams have only one practice session to understand their cars before Sprint Qualifying later on Friday. The Sprint then takes place on Saturday morning, with Grand Prix Qualifying following later that afternoon.


For an established generation of cars, that would already be demanding...


For a completely new technical formula, after a month-long summer break, it becomes considerably more significant.


Teams are still learning how the 2026 cars respond to different circuit characteristics, while drivers and engineers have to understand the interaction between active aero, energy deployment and tyre behaviour. A single missed setup direction could be difficult to recover from.


And the possibility of rain over the weekend will make that even more complicated.


Fan Favourites

The competitive picture has tightened, but Mercedes remains the logical benchmark.


The team won the first six races of the season and, although Ferrari and McLaren have since broken that run, Mercedes still leads both championships and has demonstrated the strongest overall consistency. Toto Wolff has also acknowledged that their rivals have reduced the performance gap and that Mercedes has been slightly out of step with some competitors on upgrades.


This will make Zandvoort an interesting test of whether Mercedes’ advantage is fundamentally tied to the characteristics of the W17 or whether the gap has genuinely narrowed.


On paper however, this circuit should suit their car.


Zandvoort does not place an overwhelming premium on maximum straight-line performance, instead rewarding stability and efficiency through the faster corners, while the short lap makes it difficult for a car to hide a weakness in any particular sector.


Mercedes should therefore have a strong baseline.


There is also unfinished business between the team and circuit.


Mercedes has never won at modern Zandvoort, despite coming close since the Dutch Grand Prix returned in 2021. Toto Wolff has identified this as Mercedes’ best opportunity to change that record.


The bigger question is whether the team can execute the task.


Mercedes itself has admitted that points have been left on the table, while development has become increasingly important as its rivals close in. Zandvoort’s compressed Sprint format leaves very little room for operational mistakes, but also means more points are up for grabs to extend their title leads.


McLaren's Comeback

If Mercedes arrives as the benchmark, McLaren is the team with the most momentum.


The defending constructors’ champions finally took their first victory of 2026 in Hungary, with Lando Norris converting the team’s recent progress into his first Grand Prix win as the Driver's World Champion. Crucially, that result came as McLaren introduced the first part of a larger upgrade package.


The second part is set to arrive at Zandvoort, making the Dutch Grand Prix an important test.


Hungary demonstrated that McLaren could compete at the front, but Zandvoort presents a different challenge: demanding high-speed stability and aerodynamic efficiency rather than simply rewarding a car that excels in slow corners.


If the latest upgrade works as intended, McLaren should be close enough to Mercedes to make this a two-team fight to the finish line.


Ferrari Threat

Despite all this, Ferrari remains the most obvious threat at the front.


The team has already beaten Mercedes over a Grand Prix distance this season, with Lewis Hamilton winning in Barcelona and Charles Leclerc taking victory at Silverstone. It's also easy for fans to identify Ferrari as Mercedes’ closest rival on average, despite the team falling short of its expected performance in Hungary.


Zandvoort’s layout could suit the SF26 if Ferrari can find the right aerodynamic balance.


The problem is that race pace alone may not be enough.


With overtaking difficult, Ferrari needs to qualify near the front. Starting several places behind a Mercedes or McLaren that has comparable long-run pace could effectively neutralise any advantage Ferrari has over a stint.


That makes the qualifying battle particularly important for both Hamilton and Leclerc.


Verstappen's Final Dutch Grand Prix

Verstappen has won three Dutch Grands Prix and knows the circuit intimately as his home race. More importantly for him, Zandvoort rewards commitment. The fast corners leave little room for hesitation, while the narrow layout and banking create opportunities for a driver willing to attack the track: perfectly suited to Max's driving style and nature.


This will also be Verstappen’s final home Grand Prix at Zandvoort for the foreseeable future.


He has spoken about wanting to enjoy the occasion rather than allowing the significance of the final race to become a burden. But once the helmet goes on, the competitive calculation remains the same: if Red Bull can put Verstappen within reach of the leading cars, he is more than capable of turning that opportunity into a result.


Red Bull will also head to Zandvoort with a surprise change to its line-up:


Isack Hadjar will miss the weekend with a wrist injury, with Liam Lawson stepping up from Racing Bulls to partner Max Verstappen. Yuki Tsunoda will return to Racing Bulls in Lawson’s place, giving both drivers an unexpected opportunity at a crucial point in the season.


For Lawson, it is another chance to prove he belongs at Red Bull, making the team the ultimate wildcard heading into Zandvoort.


Aston Martin In Recovery?

Further down the order, Aston Martin provides perhaps the most interesting technical experiment of the weekend.


The team brought a significant chassis package to Hungary, with 16 upgrades aimed at improving aerodynamic performance and reducing weight. The results were encouraging, with Fernando Alonso reaching Q2 for the first time this season and both Aston Martins competing in the midfield during the race.


Honda will be introducing an updated power unit at Zandvoort, with the aim of providing incremental gains across several areas, making this race a real test of the overall package they'll be left to tackle the rest of the season with.


The team now has a stronger chassis package and a revised power unit, but almost no time to understand the combination before competitive running begins.


If Aston Martin takes another step forward, it would suggest the Hungary upgrade was not simply circuit-dependent. But, if it struggles to convert the gains, the team may have to wait for a more conventional weekend to properly understand its progress.


The Forecast Could Change Everything

The forecast may ultimately be the factor that disrupts all of the above.


Friday is expected to feature showers moving in from the North Sea, with the possibility of local thunderstorms. Saturday currently carries a greater risk of rain, with the Sprint potentially facing heavy rainfall. Sunday is expected to be considerably more settled, with drier conditions and temperatures around 22°C, creating an unusual scenario.


The teams could be forced to learn the 2026 cars in wet or changing conditions during the very sessions where they have the least time available, before potentially racing in the dry on Sunday.


The significance of this goes beyond the setup, where the new cars have been designed around active aerodynamics, substantially reduced downforce and much greater electrical deployment. Wet conditions could provide the first serious examination of how those systems interact when grip is severely compromised.


Final Thoughts

The evidence heading into this weekend points towards a tight battle between Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren.


Mercedes has the stronger season-long case, being the most complete overall package, with few obvious weaknesses around a circuit that rewards aerodynamic efficiency and high-speed stability.


McLaren, however, has the momentum.


Its Budapest victory came at the right moment, and the completion of its upgrade package may give Norris and Piastri a realistic opportunity to close the remaining gap. If the new parts deliver, Zandvoort could mark the point at which McLaren moves from occasional threat to consistent challenger.


Ferrari sits close enough to capitalise, particularly if qualifying works in its favour.


And this is what makes the final Dutch Grand Prix so compelling.


Zandvoort is not merely saying goodbye to Formula 1...


It is doing so at the precise moment when the sport is beginning to understand its new technical era, with a championship battle shaping up to be one for the ages.


With a Sprint, the possibility of wet running, a major McLaren upgrade and Honda’s latest power-unit development, Zandvoort could produce one of the most unpredictable weekends of the season so far.


For a circuit that has always demanded commitment, this final chapter could provide the clearest indication yet of which teams have truly mastered Formula 1’s new rules — and which are still trying to catch up.
